Movember is a yearly campaign in which people grow a moustache through November to raise awareness of men's health. As a cyclist, you can grow one, ride with mates who are growing one, or simply wear a moustache jersey for the month. Our Hairy Mustache and Keep Calm and Mustache designs come in short and long sleeve.

What is Movember?

Movember is an annual event in which people grow moustaches during the month of November. It is a home-grown idea: the Movember Foundation was formed in 2003 and is based in Melbourne. The Foundation says the work it funds covers mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. It began with a group of mates growing moustaches together, and its site now says it has funded more than 1,320 projects around the world.

Online Cycling Gear is not connected with the Movember Foundation, and we do not collect donations. To sign up, start a fundraising page or donate, go straight to movember.com. What we can help with is the fun part: a jersey that makes the moustache theme obvious from fifty metres away.

How can cyclists take part in Movember?

Some riders bring their own moustache. The jersey does the rest.

Movember's own site lists a few ways in: grow a Mo, move your body or host your own event. The movement challenge is called Move, and on the Australian site it asks you to run or walk 60 km over the month, in one go or bit by bit. The number is there to remember the 60 men lost to suicide around the world every hour.

That Move page names running and walking, not cycling, so check movember.com before you count your rides toward it. You can still do plenty on a bike. Grow a moustache and wear it on every ride, or host a group ride for your mates and point everyone to their own Movember page to sign up or give.

There is also a gentler way in. Wearing a moustache jersey for the month is a fun way to show you are in, and it gets people asking about it at the café stop.

Which moustache cycling jerseys can you wear?

We have two moustache designs, and between them they cover the whole kit.

The Men's Hairy Mustache Short Sleeve Cycling Jersey is the loud one. The same design comes as the Hairy Mustache Gel Padded Cycling Bib, our bib knicks, and as the Hairy Mustache 2 Piece Cycling Kit, which pairs the jersey with matching padded knicks.

The Keep Calm and Mustache design is calmer, as the name promises. In our Australian store it comes as a long sleeve jersey.

Which one to pick comes down to how loud you want to be. If you are growing a real moustache, the Keep Calm design lets it take the attention. Riders whose upper lip is not cooperating can let the Hairy Mustache kit make up for it from shoulder to knee.

The short sleeve jersey uses 140 GSM moisture-wicking polyester with 110 GSM mesh side panels, three back pockets, a full-length hidden zip and a silicone waist gripper. The bib knicks have a 9D silicone gel pad and wide 45 mm leg grippers. Our sizes run small, so check the size chart on this page before you choose. Our jerseys have a club fit cut, so size up if you are between sizes.

What should you wear for a Movember ride in spring?

November is late spring, and the days are getting long and warm. Short sleeves and knicks will do for most rides, and the Hairy Mustache short sleeve jersey, with its mesh side panels, suits a warm morning. The kit keeps the whole look in one design, jersey to knicks.

The Keep Calm and Mustache long sleeve jersey is made in the same wicking fabric as our short sleeve jerseys by default, so it is not a winter-only piece. It works on a cool early start in the hills or for riders who like their arms covered. Keep the thermal fleece option for winter.

Whatever you wear, put sunscreen on before you go and carry more water than you think you need on hot days. A cycling cap under the helmet also keeps sweat out of your eyes. Our guide on what to wear cycling at every temperature covers the rest.

How do you plan a Movember group ride?

A month of November rides, one week at a time Four weeks of November, each drawn with a little more hair on the upper lip. In week 1, clean shave: a short ride with friends to start the month. Week 2, stubble: a regular weekend ride. By week 3 it shows: a longer ride with a cafe stop. At week 4, fully grown: a group ride and a group photo. Four weeks, four rides Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Clean shave Stubble It shows Fully grown Short ride with friends to start Your usual weekend ride A longer ride with a cafe stop Group ride and the group photo
  1. Pick a date late in the month, when the moustaches have had time to grow and look their best in the photo.
  2. Choose a route everyone can ride together, with a café stop in the middle, and start early on hot days.
  3. Agree on the kit. One moustache design looks sharp in a group photo, but any jersey is welcome.
  4. Order early. Every jersey is made to order, so collect sizes in October and order together.
  5. Send everyone who wants to give or fundraise to movember.com, so the money goes straight there.
  6. Take the group photo at the café, while the kit is still clean.

On the day, ride at the pace of the slowest rider so the group stays together, and agree on a regrouping point after any long climb. A flat loop works better than a hilly one if some of the group ride only now and then. A shared kit order can also clear free shipping on orders over A$125. If a size is wrong, non-customised items come with 60-day store-credit returns, as our returns policy explains.

Do you need a moustache to wear a moustache jersey?

No. The jersey carries the joke on its own, so a clean-shaven rider can wear one just as well. Our designs are men's cuts, and the long sleeve product page lets you request a different size or gender through the customisation options, so anyone in the group can wear the same design. Customised orders are final, so check the size chart before you choose.
